Trompe l'oeil

The word trompe l'œil derives from the French word “tromper”, to deceive, and “œil”, eye and it is a naturalistic painting technique, based on the use of light and shade effects and perspective, that reproduces, in the paintings, reality in such a way that it creates in the viewer's eye that optical illusion of reality. It creates an ambiguity between the painting and the viewer, making things appear in three dimensions when in reality they are two dimensional; this way the viewer perceives that optical illusion of a nonexistent, artificially created reality through the use of pictorial means.
